Outreach and Scholarship

United Church
of Canada

Outreach
  • St.John's has a very active Outreach Committee responsible for educating the congregation about issues, projects, and initiatives that affect the lives of people all over the global village.
  • The Outreach Committee is also responsible for programs that address and serve the needs of those disadvantaged by life's circumstances.
  • Outreach (reaching out a hand of support) is our Christian response to a hurting world. Under this committee's guidance, through financial donations, volunteerism, and committed action, we put our faith into practice.
  • St John's supports many organizations in the community and throughout the world such as:
  • ACSA's food bank
  • Out of the cold
  • Sing play and learn
  • Educational scholarships

ACSA's Food Bank

  • Agincourt Community Services Association Food Bank
  • Donations of canned goods and imperishable foods can be brought to the church for distribution to the food bank

Out of the Cold
3 times a year our outreach committee along with volunteers from the congregation take our turn and provide a supper and a breakfast for the homeless in a Scarborough Church Everyone is Welcome to assist.

Sing Play and Learn
This program began in 1993. It is completely run by volunteers from St. John's and is open to everyone in the community. The program is for preschoolers and runs from September thru May Wednesday mornings from 10 11:30am. It is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and includes many faiths. The program includes a time for music, singing and marching, a snack time, stories, crafts and free play time. There is no charge and everyone is welcome.

Scholarships

In 1949 our outreach committee initiated a community scholarship fund, which grants scholarships annually to assist deserving students from among our local high schools in furthering their education. The scholarships are granted to students from one of 9 high schools in our community who have completed high school and have shown active participation in contributing to the life of their school and active commitment to community service. A second program awards scholarships to further and enrich the experience of students currently pursuing a vocal music education by having them actively participate in the choral ministry of St John's. Applications are available at the church office. Everyone is welcome to apply.
